Have you heard of SAFETY COFFINS?

Makes no sense? yes it does, as it did in the 1800's in Germany. There were several cases of premature burials reported throughout Europe, when there were no reliable ways to know if someone was dead or in a coma.

This was clubbed with the fear of being buried alive. Imagine waking up in a closed coffin where you can hardly move and screams would be unheard. However, there was a German priest who came up with a brilliant idea.

Installation of a simple mechanism inside a coffin where a tube was passed through the coffin cover from inside all the way out above the burial ground. A string was tied to the toe of the dead body and the other end was passed through the tube leading out of the burial ground and tied to a bell. If the person buried was alive, he/she would move causing the string to be pulled and thus pulling the bell signalling someone around for help.

Obviously thanks to the great progress in medical science we dont need this as we now know for sure if someone is dead or not
